Planning Consultant – How to Become an Effective Planning Consultant

Planning consultants are those people who offer relevant advices on all matters concerned with development, production, and of course, planning. They are being hired by businesses and individuals to get their expert opinions on how they can make the whole planning stage as cost-effective as much possible. In addition, these consultants help in minimizing unforeseen errors that can cause tremendous delay.

If you are very organized and if you think that you have what it takes to be a planning consultant, this article is for you. Here’s what you need to do to be successful in this field:

1. Know the project inside out. If you are handling an event, you need to know what it is all about, when and where it will take place, the people involved, its goals and objectives, the things that organizers would like to see on the actual event, the number of audience, etc. As a consultant, it is very important that you get as much information as possible to make your job relatively easier.

2. Work with your team. Before you make action plans or recommendations, it would be better if you can talk with other people who are involved in the event. These are the production crew, the organizers, the performers, the presenters, the marketing team, media team, etc. Get all these people in one room where you can brainstorm. Their outputs will surely give you an idea about the best things that you can do to save expenses while trying to improve the outcome.

3. Create an action plan. Spend at least a couple of days creating an action plan as to how you can make the event successful while you save some money in the process. You may want to do exchange deals with other companies. You can offer them with exposure while they offer you with free materials. Then, ensure the smooth flow of the event by knowing what will happen when. By doing so, you can calculate everything that is needed and those that are not really necessary.

4. Lay out your plans. Get all the key persons involved in the event and tell them about your action plans. Be ready for some retaliation as you surely won’t be able to please everyone. Be willing to make revisions (especially if your clients ask for it). Then, explain to these people how your suggestions and your expert advice can save them money while making sure that the event will still be successful.

Consulting – Principles For Effective Consulting

Every consultant has different perspective on effective consulting. In this article, I wish to share with you the guidelines that you might find useful as you reflect your own principles:

1. The solutions to every problem lie between you and your clients. Contrary to popular beliefs, consulting is not a process where clients will talk about their problems and consultants will provide solutions or recommendations right away. The involved parties need to think it through, weigh their options, and go with the best one that will benefit the organization or the company as a whole.

2. Consultants should recognize and even encourage diverse values and perspective within an organization. Every employee is unique and they see issues in the organization in a very different manner. As a consultant, you must know how to accept this fact and use it to your advantage. Keep in mind that different perspective might dramatically help in problem solving.

3. Get all angles of the problem. Start from where your clients are at the moment. Ask about their pressing issues/struggles and their causes, what they have tried so far, what worked and what didn’t work, and their ideas as to what could be done now. Although this might take some of your time, this can keep you on track when designing your action plans.

4. Consulting isn’t about blaming. It is very rare that a client or a consultant is out to hurt somebody in an organization. Although some people might be the reasons why the problem occurred, blaming them will surely not help solve the problem. As a consultant, your focus should be to help your clients find the solutions to their problems.
